Administering a Roving Edge Device Through the Serial Console

The Roving Edge device has a serial console that enables you to administer the device while directly connected to the device.

To use the serial console, perform these actions:

1. Ensure that a USB serial port driver is installed on your local computer. See Set Up Terminal Emulation.
2. Set up terminal emulation on the local computer, See Set Up Terminal Emulation.
3. Connect a local computer, such as a laptop to the device serial port. See Cable the Roving Edge Device.

4. Power on or reboot the device.

   The serial console prompts you for the passphrase to unlock the device.

5. Enter the passphrase.

   The device is unlocked and the serial console main menu is displayed.

The device serial console provides the following menu options:

• Change Passphrase: Use to update the device's unlocking passphrase. See Changing the Serial Console Passphrase.

• Check Network Configuration: Use to display the Ethernet port IP configuration and to enable and disable physical Ethernet ports. See Showing Roving Edge System Diagnostics

• Show Status: Use to check the device's current UTC time, boot time, serial number, software version, and serial console version.

• Show System Diagnostics: Use to display device diagnostic information. See Showing Roving Edge System Diagnostics.

• Shutdown Device: Use to shut down the device.

• Reboot Device: Use to the reboot the device.

• Advanced Menu: Use to access more serial console operations:

  • Banner Management: Use to display, update, and enable or disable the banner. See Managing the Serial Console Banner.

  • Network Management: Use to run network diagnostics with ping and traceroute, or connect using SSH over the serial console. See Testing Device Network Connectivity and Accessing the Management Host Securely.

  • Passphrase Management: Use to specify the number of user login attempts that are allowed, and to set the number of days before the passphrase expires. See Managing Serial Console Sign-In Attempts and Setting the Serial Console Passphrase Expiration Period.

  • Sanitize Device Management: Use to wipe data from a Roving Edge device. See Sanitizing a Roving Edge Device.

• Help: Use to display online help for the serial console.

• Lock Screen: Use to lock the serial console screen.
