Quick Start: Oracle Radio on iPhone
How to set up the iPhone Oracle Radio app, select a channel, and complete your first voice and text exchange.
These steps are for the Oracle Radio iPhone app only. For Android, use the channel steps and talk steps. For the browser, see Using Radio.
Before you begin, ask your administrator for your organization’s installation instructions, an enrollment QR code for your account, and a channel you can use for a radio check. You need an active Identity Domain account and enabled Radio access, see Getting Started with Public Safety and Security. Your Radio groups and channel access must allow the actions you perform; see Radio permissions.
Use a designated test channel and nonsensitive messages for your first exchange. Don't use Critical Alert for a routine radio check.
Step 1: Install and Sign In
- Install Oracle Radio using your organization’s approved instructions. See mobile downloads.
- Open Oracle Radio. On Connect to your organization, select Scan enrollment code.
- Allow camera access when prompted, and scan the enrollment QR code supplied by your administrator.
- Sign in with your OCI Identity Domain credentials for the assigned Oracle Radio iPhone device. Review and accept the agreements presented by the app. For administrators, see Registering an Oracle Radio Device.
- Open the Radio app, verify your displayed identity, and check that you are on duty and Connected. Allow microphone access for voice communication and notifications for incoming mobile content when prompted.
An installation link or QR code opens the app download, another enrollment QR code configures the installed app. Scan enrollment QR codes inside Radio, and keep these private. If you don't have a usable code, contact your administrator. See device enrollment for the administrator and registration details.
Step 2: Select a Channel
Your administrator must grant the applicable channel permissions and access.
- Open Channels. If your assigned channel isn't under Joined Channels, select Join Channel, find the intended channel, and select Join. Check for Joined before continuing.
- Under Joined Channels, select the channel to make it your active talk channel.
- Return to Radio and verify the active channel name before speaking.
Joining channels lets you receive communication from multiple channels. The active talk channel is your voice destination. Joining a channel doesn't start a transmission. To leave a channel, see iOS channels.
Step 3: Complete an Oracle Radio Check
You need the applicable voice permissions and channel access. Arrange the check with another authorized user on the same test channel.
- In Radio, check the duty and connection status. Go on duty if needed, and wait for Connected. If disconnected, restore Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity and allow Radio to reconnect. See duty status.
- Check the active channel name in Radio. If it isn't your test channel, follow the channel steps to select the correct channel.
- Allow microphone access when prompted. If you previously denied access, open the iPhone’s Settings app and allow microphone access for Oracle Radio. This allows Radio to capture your voice; being connected alone doesn't grant microphone access.
- Make sure incoming audio isn't muted, and adjust the volume on your iPhone or connected headset. Check that you are listening through the intended speaker or headset. If you can't hear your test partner, follow audio help.
- In the default hold mode, press and hold Hold to talk. Wait for Transmitting, then keep holding while you say a short test message, such as “Radio check on the training channel.”
- Release the button to finish, and verify that transmission has ended. Releasing while the floor request is pending cancels the request.
- Listen for the other user’s reply. If either person can't hear the exchange, check connection, channel, microphone, and audio output before repeating it. See audio help.
If you prefer tap mode, open Settings, select Radio & Voice, and turn on Tap to toggle talking under Screen PTT Button. Select Tap to talk, wait for Transmitting, and select Tap to stop to finish. Use Tap to cancel for a pending request. Lifting your finger after the first tap doesn't stop transmission. The upgrade switches existing installations to hold mode once; later choices persist. See iOS screen PTT settings and iOS talk steps.
Step 4: Send a Message and Check Inbox
You need the applicable messaging permissions and channel access.
- In Radio, select Message.
- Verify the destination Channel, enter a nonsensitive test message, and select Send. Leave Critical Message off for this routine check.
- Open Inbox. Use Sent to review your outgoing entry and Received for replies, or select All.
- Open an entry to review its text or available voice playback. Confirm receipt with your test partner; a sent entry alone isn't proof that they heard or read it.
Inbox is not a complete recording archive, and some entries can remain after playback becomes unavailable. See mobile Inbox for playback and local-history limits, or Inbox help for missing content.
Step 5: Enable Pocket Mode If Needed
Use Pocket Mode when you need Radio reception while your iPhone is locked or you use another app. You must remain signed in and on duty; iOS requires microphone access even for this listening mode.
- In Radio, expand the duty and connection row.
- Turn on Pocket Mode. Allow microphone access when prompted.
- Review the displayed status. If reception doesn't connect, keep Radio open, restore connectivity, and select Reconnect Pocket Mode when available.
- Check reception with your test partner before relying on it. Turn Pocket Mode off when you no longer want background reception.
Enabling the switch doesn't confirm audio delivery. Closing the app can leave its background session connected. You can also manage reception from Settings, under Background Reception. See Pocket Mode for status, recovery, and the effect on hardware talk controls.
If you deny microphone access, you can still listen while Radio is open, but you can't transmit or use Pocket Mode. See microphone access for the difference between foreground and background reception.
Step 6: Go Off Duty or Sign Out
- To pause Radio activity while remaining signed in, select Go Off Duty and confirm if prompted.
- When returning to duty, go on duty and check your connection and active channel before speaking.
- To end your signed-in app session, open Settings, select Sign Out, and complete any confirmation. Verify the app returns to sign-in.
Going off duty isn't sign-out. Mobile sign-out doesn't guarantee that separate browser or device sessions end. Follow your organization’s shared-device procedure. See duty status.
For a temporary connection or token-renewal failure, restore connectivity and allow the app to recover. If Radio requires sign-in again, sign in with your intended account. Don't re-enroll for every connection failure; see session recovery.
Next Steps
- Review location sharing and your organization’s location policy before enabling it.
- Learn the separate Critical Alert procedure before using urgent voice communication.
- Review Radio settings for personal preferences and supported equipment.
- For connection or access problems, use troubleshooting or contact your Radio administrator with the app version and nonsensitive error text. Don't share enrollment codes or credentials.
